02 / ABOUT ME

FROM MY GARDEN
TO THE WORLD STAGE.

I’m Ádám Urbán, a member of the Hungarian STIHL TIMBERSPORTS team. I was born in 2008 and live in Göd, Hungary.

I started chopping wood at twelve, making kindling for our fireplace in the back garden. Working with wood, the age-old craft, the axe and the saw fascinated me from the very beginning.

To me, woodchopping is also about being close to nature, tradition and freedom. Even then, I knew that working with wood would be a defining part of my life.

HOW IT ALL STARTED

My first training camp

In 2021, my parents and I contacted the Hungarian STIHL TIMBERSPORTS team, who invited me to a training camp. Back then, even handling the professional axes and saws was a challenge. But the experience and the people I met made it clear where I wanted to go.

Training on my garden stage

Over the following years, I spent almost every spare moment practising TIMBERSPORTS disciplines on the stage we had set up in our garden. I combined technical practice with regular strength and endurance training, which remain part of my routine today. I also began competing in Hungary and became an official rookie athlete for the Hungarian team.

Working with wood is my trade, too

Alongside competing, I completed my carpentry studies in Vác. That meant I could spend my time at school doing what truly interests me, too: working with wood.

Representing Hungary across Europe

In 2026, I finished sixth at the Rookie World Championship in Budapest, before claiming my first victory in Poland in September. That year also gave me the chance to test myself in Italy, France and Germany.

MY FIRST TIME
ON THE TOP STEP.

At the International Polish Newcomer Cup, I stood on the top step of the podium for the first time in my life. The long hours in the garden, the preparation and the training came together in a moment I will never forget.

WHAT IS
TIMBERSPORTS?

STIHL TIMBERSPORTS is a competitive sport rooted in traditional logging skills. Athletes race to cut through mounted logs using axes, hand saws or chainsaws. Technique, precision and rhythm matter just as much as strength.

A classic professional individual competition has six disciplines: three with axes and three with saws. Valid times determine the points awarded in each discipline; the overall points total decides the winner.

01

Underhand Chop

Chopping a horizontal log

Standing on a horizontal log, the athlete chops through it with an axe from both sides, between their feet. It recreates cutting a felled tree into sections.

02

Standing Block Chop

Chopping a vertical log

The athlete chops through a vertically mounted log from both sides with an axe. This discipline recreates the action of felling a tree.

03

Springboard

Chopping from a board

Athletes cut pockets into an upright pole and insert boards to climb it, then chop through the log at the top. Professionals use two boards; rookies use one.

04

Stock Saw

Standard chainsaw

In individual competition, athletes use the same model of standard chainsaw to cut two complete discs within a marked area: one downward cut and one upward cut.

05

Single Buck

Single-person hand sawing

Using a hand saw about two metres long, the athlete cuts a complete disc from a horizontal log. A smooth motion and a steady rhythm are especially important.

06

Hot Saw

High-powered chainsaw

Professionals use custom-built, high-powered chainsaws to cut three complete discs within a narrow marked area. Controlling the saw precisely is just as important as its speed.

How do rookies compete?

The rookie category helps young athletes develop their skills. Standard rookie competitions feature four disciplines: Stock Saw, Standing Block Chop, Single Buck and Underhand Chop. At the Rookie World Championship, the final also includes the one-board Springboard. Hot Saw is not part of rookie competitions.
